The students of the Belarusian State University of Physical Culture (n=66) engaged in martial arts (wushu. judo) were examined. All the students were male. Their age was 18.4 ± 1.3 years. The surveyed contingent was divided into two groups according to the level of sportsmanship. The first group (n = 42) included students engaged in martial arts with a relatively low level of sports qualifications, the second group (n = 24) included students engaged in martial arts with a high level of sports qualifications. The questionnaire "Methods of coping behavior" by R. Lazarus and the questionnaire of motivation of competitive activity by G. D. Babushkin were used.

It was revealed that as the professional skills of martial arts students increased, there was an increase in adaptive potential. Students with low athletic professional capabilities (the first group) more often used less adaptive coping strategies (confrontation, distancing, escape – avoidance); students with high professionalism (the second group) more often used adaptive coping strategies (self-control, search for social support, taking responsibility for yourself, planning).
V.I.
