Incorporation of the Starodub cossack elders into the class system of the Russian empire. Transformation of local elites of the border region (second half of the 18th – first half of the 19th century)

The paper presents for the first time the process of transformation of local elites of the border region – Starodubshchina in the second half of the 18th – first half of the 19th century based on the study of a wide range of archival sources. The features of integration of descendants of the Cossack elders of the region into the class system of the Russian Empire, caused by the border position of the region, are revealed. It is noted that the process of class transformation went through several stages, and the border specificity was preserved in Starodubshchina for a long time after the region lost its border status. Local elites of the region fought for their privileges, effectively adapting to changing circumstances. The transformation process was completed only in the mid-1850s as a result of reforms carried out during the reign of Emperor Nicholas I.
