Combined use of physical exercise and light-magnetic therapy for traumatic knee injuries in athletes : evaluation of the results of a pilot study

This article analyzes the results of a pilot study evaluating the combined use of physical exercise and light-magnetotherapy for traumatic knee injuries in athletes.
The pilot study involved 13 athletes with post-traumatic knee injuries, randomized by age and the studied parameters of range of motion and muscle tone in the injured knee. The athletes comprised a study group (7 participants), an observation group, and a comparison group (6 participants). The study group utilized a program of physical exercise, massage, and light-magnetotherapy. The comparison group utilized a standard exercise program and massage.
The results of the pilot study demonstrated the feasibility of using localized low-intensity light-magnetotherapy as part of a physical exercise program during the early stages of rehabilitation for knee injuries in athletes. However, to increase the statistical power of the obtained results, it is advisable to increase the sample size. The proposed comprehensive rehabilitation program, which directly incorporates light and magnetic therapy into exercise sessions, demonstrated faster and more stable positive dynamics in the study group compared to the standard rehabilitation program. Furthermore, the use of light and magnetic therapy immediately before and after the exercise therapy session according to the proposed scheme contributed to a reduction in subjective and objective manifestations of inflammation and swelling of the knee joint tissue on the injured side, a decrease in pain severity, and a subjective improvement in exercise tolerance. In the control group, the results were characterized by less stability in terms of the above criteria, with a higher rate of recurrence of adverse symptoms, indicating the insufficient effectiveness, in some cases, of the standard rehabilitation program, which included light and magnetic therapy and massage. A statistical comparative analysis of intergroup differences using the U-test revealed that the study group demonstrated the following: higher efficacy of the proposed comprehensive rehabilitation program compared to the standard program in restoring muscle tone and strength in both the flexor and extensor muscles on the injured side; positive dynamics in all studied parameters of range of motion and muscle tone without negative shifts, allowing us to recommend the developed program for widespread implementation in sports rehabilitation practices after knee injuries; additional use of light-magnetic therapy does not provide a critical increase in range of motion, but significantly accelerates and enhances the recovery of the knee joint muscles on the injured side.
