Abstract

For the first time, the features of the functioning of allegory in the philosophy and literature of postmodernism are revealed. Interpretations of allegory are given from the point of view of leading postmodernist critics. The article states that the allegory was born from the desire of the past to leave a memory of itself, combining the ancient and the modern. The allegory is revealed as the extension of the metaphorical axis of the language to its metonymic dimension. By imputing an allegorical dimension to every work of art, the philosopher repeats the regularly criticized error of generalizing the concept of «allegory» until it becomes meaningless.
